CHARLIE RUTAN’s life of bagpiping has spanned the traditional & progressive piping styles of Scotland, Ireland, Italy & France. A Philadelphia native, he currently performs with Philly band ‘Sylvia Platypus’, Wash DC’s ‘Tower Green’ , NYC’s ‘Coro d’ Italia’, ‘Rosa Tatuata’, and local duo ‘The Bee and Bull’

He’s fresh off NCTA’s 2026 Lowell Mass Folk fest, has been seen on all the major broadcast networks, in the movie “Bitter Souls” (2024), has worked across the USA and at the 600 year old “Frecagnola” festival in southern Italy, once even being dubbed "the Eddie VanHalen of the Bagpipe" by John Lennons bassist, Gary VonScyoc.

Charlie’s discography features Philly band Sylvia Platypus, Sicilian roots band Rosa Tatuata, and his own release ‘Urban Village Piping’.
Charlie studied at the Piping Centre in Glasgow, Scotland, and at Philly’s legendary University of the Arts.
